When I moved to the USA from the Philippines, I was captivated by the greatness of athletes like Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. Watching them on TV, I silently declared to myself, “I want to play sports and be an athlete.” But growing up in a culture and household where girls weren’t encouraged to be athletic, that dream seemed far away.
Still, I knew—deep in my heart—that I wanted to play sports and be acknowledged as an athlete. My love for sports blossomed during cherished moments with my mom, watching tennis, baseball, basketball—any sport we could find on TV. The movement, the muscles, the strength—it all spoke to something inside me that wouldn’t be silenced.
As I grew older, however, I began to notice something missing. In the pages of fashion magazines, there was little to no representation of women who celebrated strength and athleticism. It wasn’t until my 20s that I stumbled upon a fitness magazine featuring strong, powerful women. That moment was a revelation.
What I didn’t realize until much later was that I had been searching—intentionally and relentlessly—for representation. I wanted to see women who looked like me, who moved like me, who embodied strength in every sense of the word. I wasn’t just dreaming of being an athlete; I was willing myself to become one.
Let this be a reminder: even when the world doesn’t show you the examples you need, you can create your own. Your strength, your determination, and your vision of who you are meant to be will lead the way. Never stop believing in your potential to rewrite the narrative and step into your greatness. You are more powerful than you realize.
In March 2020, I faced an unexpected setback when I was let go from my job. It was a challenging moment, but as they say, every storm carries the seeds of new beginnings. Little did I know, the idea for Strong Mind, Able Body was about to take root during an ordinary conversation that became anything but.
One day, while chatting with my hairdresser, she asked about my strength training. I told her I was done putting myself on the back burner. I shared that while I had always been physically strong, it was the mental strength I’d built through training that truly transformed me. I said, “Women—including me—are so much stronger than we think we are.”
Our conversation caught the ear of another woman in the salon, a complete stranger, who turned to us and said, “I needed to hear that.” Her words struck a chord with me. She agreed wholeheartedly, affirming that she was stronger than she had believed.
That moment lit a fire in me. I realized that if a single conversation could inspire someone to see their strength, I could do so much more. From that day forward, I made it my mission to ensure that every woman who crossed my path left feeling stronger, more empowered, and infused with positive energy.
Let this story remind you: you are stronger than you know. Sometimes, all it takes is one conversation, one connection, or one spark to ignite the strength you already carry within. Share your strength. Uplift others. Because when we embrace our power and inspire one another, there’s no limit to what we can achieve. 💪✨
I like to be strong—what else can I say? Just kidding. Strength is so much more than lifting weights; it’s about discovering who you truly are.
I started as a powerlifter and eventually transitioned to strongman, and in that journey, something incredible happened. Strength sports didn’t just build my body—they awakened my spirit. They brought out the competitor in me and revealed a truth I’d always known deep down:
